A Non-Touristy Guide to Maui

An evening of an open fire dinner with Kiawe Outdoor.

If you’re planning a trip to Maui and want to skip the overly touristy spots, this guide is for you.

I spent three years living in Hawaiʻi before moving to San Diego, and Maui is one of the places that shaped me most creatively. The real magic of this island isn’t in the resorts. It’s in the small businesses, the upcountry mornings, the farmers markets, the family-run restaurants, and the diverse scenery.

Whether you’re visiting for a honeymoon, couples trip, engagement session, or elopement, this is my full non-touristy Maui guide. Every place listed here is somewhere I genuinely love and personally recommend.

Upcountry Maui

Marlow – Upcountry

Neapolitan-style sourdough pizza in a modern upcountry setting. Pair it with a drink at Mahalo Aleworks beforehand and make it a full evening.

Mahalo Aleworks – Upcountry

Perfect pre-dinner stop before Marlow. Great craft beer with open upcountry views.

Crema – Kula

My favorite espresso on Maui. Think Big Island honey, Maui lavender, fresh pastries, cool air, and slower mornings.

Espresso Mafia – Makawao

Family-run coffee truck with seriously good craft espresso. Stop here before wandering Makawao’s boutiques.

Kihei, South Side

Nalu’s – Kihei

One of my favorites for brunch, lunch, or dinner. Live music and a strong local crowd. The Korean burger is a must.

Isana Sushi – Kihei

Great sushi with one of the best happy hours on the island. Go from 3 to 5 pm or 9 to 10 pm for late night deals.

Maui Brew Co – Kihei

A local brewery with casual eats and live music daily from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. Great energy without feeling overly resort-driven. Easy, social, and relaxed.

Monkeypod Kitchen – Wailea & Lahaina

Fun atmosphere, solid pizza, fresh caught fish. The Mai Tai with lilikoi foam is iconic for a reason. It’s popular but consistently good.

Wailea, South Side

Birdcage Bar – Hotel Wailea

Trendy, romantic, beautiful for sunset cocktails. A great honeymoon or date-night spot.

Kiawe Outdoor Pop-Ups

A unique local dining experience that feels intimate and community-centered. Perfect for a special occasion that supports local chefs.

Spago – Four Seasons

Elevated dining in Wailea if you’re looking for something upscale or celebratory.

Morimoto – Wailea

Upscale Japanese fare with a polished setting.

The Restaurant at Hotel Wailea

Romantic, refined, and one of the best fine dining atmospheres on the island.

Kapalua, Ka’anapali, and Napili

A‘a Roots – Lahaina & Napili

Healthy food and acai bowls. Perfect for a lighter breakfast or post-beach stop.

Leoda’s – Lahaina

Call in your order. My favorites are the ahi sandwich and chicken pot pie. And of course, all the sweet pies.

Tamura’s Grocery

Simple island grocery store with one of the best local poke selections. Ideal beach lunch stop.

Kahului, North Shore (near Maui OGG Airport)

Tinroof – Kahului

Takeout only and local-loved. Chef Sheldon Simeon’s garlic noodles and double fried chicken sandwich are unreal.

Lineage – Wailea

Upscale Asian-fusion fare with craft cocktails. Ask for bar seating or inside for the best atmosphere.

Esther’s Fair Prospect – Wailuku

Modern tiki bar with creative cocktails. A cool, lesser-known evening option.

The Market – Wailea

Great sandwich menu and smoothies to grab before heading to the beach.

Nuka – Haiku

Modern izakaya and sushi bar. No reservations and usually a wait. Hop over to Colleen’s for a drink while you wait.

Ocean Vodka – Kula

Locally distilled vodka farm with incredible sunset views. Tastings are affordable and the farm-to-table menu is strong. The kimchi flatbread is a must.

Momona Bakery – Kahului

Near the airport and worth the stop. Brazilian pastries and great coffee. Perfect for arrival or departure day.

MAUI ACTIVITIES & EXPERIENCES

Waiheʻe Ridge Trail

An intermediate hike along West Maui’s green ridges. Go early before the clouds roll in. The views are dramatic and worth it.

Haleakalā Summit at Sunset

Sunrise gets the hype, but sunset is less crowded and you don’t need a permit. Bring layers. Watching the sky shift above the crater is surreal.

Saturday Morning Upcountry Farmer’s Market

The best way to support local farmers and stock up on fresh produce. Go early and take your time.

BEST MAUI BEACHES

White Rock Landing – Wailea

Less crowded than many Wailea beaches. Lava rock, glowing sunsets, and beautiful light. One of my favorite spots for couples sessions.

Baldwin Beach – North Shore

Go early morning. Long stretches of sand and soft light before the wind picks up.

Honolua Jungle & Bay

A jungle walk down to one of Maui’s best snorkeling spots. Be respectful and reef-safe.

Big Beach – Makena

Expansive and powerful. Not a beginner swimming beach, but visually stunning.
